My Experience with a Celery Detox & the 6 Benefits for Your Body

One of the most overlooked veggies is now taking center stage with it's incredible detoxifying capabilities. The least liked veggie on the crudites plate and the notoriously leftover part of the bloody mary is gaining prominence as the latest and greatest superfood. Not only is celery high in vitamins and minerals, but it is anti-inflammatory, detoxifying and gut-friendly.

Medical medium, Anthony William says:

"Celery is truly the savior when it comes to chronic illness.

I’ve seen thousands of people who suffer from chronic and mystery illness restore their health by drinking 16 ounces of celery juice daily on an empty stomach."

While 16 ounces seems slightly aggressive, even to me (that's one full STALK of celery every morning), I decided I would ease my way into it and give it a try.

Normally I'm not the biggest advocate of juices. While they can be incredibly beneficial for some people or a great way to kickstart a detox, I believe it's best to eat whole foods (fiber/pulp included) in their most natural state. The fiber is actually one of the most nutritious parts and feeds healthy gut bacteria. Additionally, a lot of juices these days are filled with sweet fruits like apples or pineapple that spike your body's sugar levels.

After doing more research I realized that celery juice is best consumed on it's own (although I eased my way into it by adding minimal amounts of sweeter fruits and veggies to start).

However, this pulp-free juice is actually incredibly healing because it has potent and bio-available nutrients that can be easily absorbed, even by those with chronic illnesses. PLUS, this de-bloating raw juice has a lot of other added benefits including a unique combination of highly concentrated salt clusters that help eliminate toxins. These high concentrations can only be found when consuming celery in juice form.

Recently I have been feeling a bit bloated and low on energy. I'm sure this is the culprit of many things, including diet, exhaustion from an over-packed schedule and never ending stimuli from NYC as well as the change in season but I was finally convinced to give this mini morning detox a try.

I have also been eating a lot of rich restaurant food lately and can definitely feel the impact of the sodium overdose. While I feel incredibly fortunate to have access to so many delicious and rich tasting meals in NYC, it definitely takes a toll if not balanced properly.

I am a firm believer that cooking should be part of your daily routine but with a 9-5 job and side hustle (and love for too many hobbies and an active social life) it's hard to find (or should I say MAKE) time to eat clean for EVERY meal. While I do opt for the salmon lunch and veggie dinner, restaurants simply add so much oil, salt, and additives that even these "healthy options" have finally taken a toll.

It was definitely time to give my body a much needed break.

Over the past week, I did a celery-Moringa detox while also limiting my restaurant meals. This detox consisted of me consuming a celery-Moringa juice (exact proportions to follow) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The rest of the day I ate and drank whatever I wanted , however I was more mindful about eating clean, wholesome foods. I also cooked more meals at home!

Why do a detox?

If you are feeling drained, frequently sick, struggling with stubborn weight gain, experiencing constipation, muscle aches and pains, anxiety, depression, autoimmune issues and skin problems like acne, eczema, and rashes, these are all signs that you’ve reached a toxic limit.

Unfortunately the urban environment is inundated with toxins. The food you eat, whether it be processed or farm raised fish laden with pesticides and high levels of mercury, your body is on overdrive to clean your system. These toxins can even be found in your self care products! A deep cleanse allows your body to flush out those toxins and re-calibrate. It's helpful to focus on a diet rich in organic leafy greens and vegetables, and healthy fats while avoiding a sugar, dairy, gluten, corn and processed foods.

Why a celery detox?

While there are many detoxes available, the celery juice detox caught my attention. I noticed it gaining traction all over social media with raving reviews so I looked into it. After beginning the audible Medical Medium but Anthony Willaim (pioneer of this celery juice cleanse) I decided it was time to try this detox myself!

Celery juicing is beneficial because it is cleansing the body of excess hormones, toxins, pesticides, metals, viruses and pathogens.

Drinking 16 ounces of freshly juiced organic celery juice every day (that’s equal to about one entire bunch of celery) is supposed to have life changing benefits after as little as a week! This just might be the best thing you can do to see quick results. Celery has a calming effect on the nervous system and happens to be an amazing blood purifier and eliminator of toxins from the body.

The mineral salts in the celery juice can help restore HCL (hydrochloric acid) in our body which we need to properly break down and digest our food. .”

celery juice has a healing effect on the nervous system, helps clean our blood of health-inhibiting toxins, aids digestion and calms inflammation. Maybe the most crucial benefit is for our gut: celery can help the gut rebuild it’s own stores of hydrochloric acid which strengthens digestion and overall gut health.

8 Benefits of Celery Juice

This nourishing juice is extremely hydrating and alkalizing, making it effective for balancing the body’s pH level and neutralizing any acidity in the body. This helps protect healthy cells and balance essential mineral levels. It also helps reduce inflammation, boost the immune system, and promote healthy weight loss.

Celery contains a unique combination of mineral salts (not your average table salt) that act together as an antiseptic. When these salts come into contact with viruses or other pathogens, the salts break down the pathogen's cell membrane, killing them and symbiotically flushing out toxins from your body. Don't worry, the distinct combination of mineral salt in celery won't dehydrate you, it's actually quite hydrating and will also stabilize your blood pressure.

Celery juice helps you rebuild HCL in your gut, which is crucial for fully digesting your food and absorbing important nutrients. Stress, health conditions and too much sugar can lower this essential stomach acid (HCL), allowing the foods we eat to rot in our gut. This weakens our systems as our other organs start to compensate for our poor digestion.

Celery counterbalances this by effectively rebuilding the stomach’s complex balance and supply of hydrochloric acid (HCL). It also strengthens the digestive system by helping to heal the liver, which leads to an increase in bile production, easing constipation and bloat. Plus by lowering levels of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses and invaders such as fungus and mold, it leads to strengthened intestinal linings, thus restoring and optimizing digestive health

It also contains special nutrients in it's fibers which are realized when the vegetable is juiced. These nutrients promote optimal functioning of the digestive track by relaxing the nerves that have been damage from unhealthy food choices.

Anthony Williams AKA Medical Medium states that celery is one of the best ways to alkalize the gut. The powerful varieties of sodium work together to eliminate toxins from every inch of your body, including your gut, helping to heal and regenerate your stomach lining. He states that drinking half a liter of fresh celery juice every morning on an empty stomach can transform your health and digestion in as little as one week.

Celery’s detoxifying properties work to remove bad bacteria, fungi, mold, viruses and other toxins from the liver; the phytonutrients found in the green stalks also can have a protective effect.

The sodium and potassium combination promotes urine production which further aids to flushing out toxins in the body. It also removes and eliminates calcium deposits from joints.

Celery is a powerhouse for supporting the nervous system. It has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system because of its detoxifying properties.

Celery contains a particular compound called coumarins which promotes the activity of white blood cells and assists the vascular system. This helps the blood flow and purifies the bloodstream.

Many diseases of the nervous and blood systems are due to the inorganic elements and salts taken in by the body in the form of dead processed products.

The sodium in celery also maintains the fluidity of the blood by preventing it from becoming too thick. Celery is rich in Vitamin A, C, iron, and magnesium. This combination helps to nourish and rebuild red blood cells and aids those suffering from rheumatism, high blood pressure, arthritis, and anemia.

Celery contains luteolin, a potent flavonoid, that can act as an antioxidant and calm inflammation. It aids any inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, making it perfect for anyone with IBS, Crohn’s, colon cancer, etc.

Celery also contains a compound called Polyacetylene, which is one of the best defenders against inflammation. It can reduce symptoms associated with arthritis, osteoarthritis, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, gout and more.

According to Medical Medium, Anthony William, the mineral salts in celery may help to fight and cleanse the body of the Epstein-Barr virus, particularly in the thyroid. Celery can also help to boost production of important thyroid hormones in those with hypothyroidism.

Studies have shown that celery extract consumption can help to prevent stroke, lower blood pressure, and reduce plaque in arteries.

Celery is high in calcium and cilicon which helps regenerate and strengthen damaged bones. Celery is also high in Vitamin K, which plays an important role in bone metabolism and protection against osteoporosis.

Why Moringa

Moringa adds an extra level of nutrition with its abundant antioxidants and unique combination of amino acids, making it a complete plant protein. The Moringa will help balance blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, balance hormones, stabilize your mood and enhance your brain health. Plus, the concentrated B vitamins will provide you with long lasting energy throughout the day.

The Protocol

Consume 16 ounces of freshly juiced organic celery and 1/2 a teaspoon of Moringa powder on an empty stomach every morning for at least 7 days straight.

For best results drink pure celery juice but if you need a little something extra to get it down feel free to add some lemon and/or cucumber. I added minimal amounts of apple, cucumber, lemon and ginger for the first few days and then transitioned slowly to pure celery.

I bought a $90 juicer on Amazon and absolutely love it. Dishwasher friendly and allows for a very quick cleanup after.

My experience

I am not an avid juicer but I really loved this celery juice. Although it may not sound like the most enticing juice option, it goes down a lot easier than other green juices. The celery is pretty light so while it definitely tastes green and healthy it's not as painful as a kale and spinach combo. I even started to love and crave it in the morning! I also found that juicing the veggies yourself really enhanced the freshness and and full experience of the juice. It smells amazing!

I have been doing this consistently for the past 10 days and have definitely noticed an enhancement in my health and energy levels.

The first day was the hardest as my body is not accustom to drinking so much liquid in the morning (aside from water). By the time I got to work though I was already feeling more energized and clear. My stomach didn't feel quite as bloated. On day two I gulped it down and by day three I was craving it in the morning. Over the course of the past 10 days I felt progressively felt more clean, energized and clear. The bloat is gone and I have had really great energy levels despite staying up late and getting less sleep.

This celery-Moringa juice is something I would like to frequently incorporate into my routine, especially when feeling bloated, low energy or like I am getting sick. I highly recommend trying it!

**Note: It definitely helped me to start with a sweeter juice (incorporating cucumber/ lemon and apple) and ease my way to pure celery-moringa juice.
