How Moringa Can Help with Fatigue & Other Anemia Related Conditions

If so, you’re a lot like me. From the time I was a teenager, I constantly felt tired and too dizzy to accomplish normal tasks. Things like school, work, and socializing were too much to multitask. If I managed to participate in one thing, I had no energy left for others.
Finally, I took a full blood test in the hopes that I could find out what was wrong with me. The results came back showing I was severely anemic and I was completely dumbfounded. How could I have anemia?
I was vegan at the time, and I deliberately made a point to get in lots of iron-filled veggies to prevent becoming anemic. My doctor explained to me that my anemia was genetic, and is caused by something called Thalassemia. Thankfully, I have a mild form, but it was still incredibly debilitating.
Just a year after I was diagnosed with anemia, my symptoms worsened as I grew into young adulthood. What began as dozing off during the day turned into me becoming nearly bed ridden. I was lethargic and energy depleted, I couldn't even get myself out of bed half of the time. I lost my full-time job in a profession I dedicated my life to. I was devastated. I’ve always been a hard worker who is extremely driven and very career-oriented, so loosing my job and being unable to work made me feel helpless.
A few months passed and I finally decided to stop feeling helpless and to start taking control of my life. I stumbled upon an article about the use of Moringa oleifera to treat anemia, and thought I had nothing to lose. I was very skeptical it was just a new fad. However, just in the first week of drinking it, I felt renewed. I’m not going to claim that Moringa cured my anemia, however, I can enjoy my life again. I can be in control. I don’t have to “pick one” between work, school, or socializing. As someone with anemia, that makes all the difference in the world.
What exactly is anemia?
Anemia is a blood disorder that causes a person to have a low count of red blood cells. Since red blood cells are vital to sending oxygen throughout the body’s organs, people who have anemia aren’t getting enough oxygen throughout their body. This causes symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, and weakness. For certain severe types, it can also cause chronic pain.
Anemia is a blood disorder that can have debilitating effects, but recent scientific research indicates Moringa Oleifera may be able to change that.
Types of Anemia
Before we get into the scientific research, it’s important to know what type of anemia you have in order to know how Moringa can best alleviate or treat the symptoms. Over 400 types of anemia exist, but there are 2 basic categories.
Anemia Caused by Vitamin Deficiencies
This type of anemia is best treated by Moringa, and encompasses anemia caused by things such as iron deficiency or folic acid deficiency.
Often times, a person can develop anemia from low iron levels. In fact, over half of people who have anemia have the iron deficiency type. This can be a result of dietary factors or a genetic predisposition.
Since iron is used to produce hemoglobin, having low iron directly correlates to having low oxygen in the red blood cells. Iron is also essential in the production of red blood cells, so having lower levels of iron means having a lower count of red blood cells. This can often be easily treated by getting enough iron in the diet or taking supplements.
Anemia caused by folic acid deficiency operates the same way, although many people are unaware that a lack of folic acid can lead to anemia. Like iron, folic acid also works to create healthy red blood cells. When it is not present, red blood cells may carry a lack of oxygen that makes them less efficient. This type of anemia is known as “Folate-deficiency anemia.”
Since Moringa is rich in both iron and folic acid, it can treat these kinds of anemia when consumed regularly.
Unlike other supplements, Moringa has both iron and folic acid in one, so you don’t have to take two separate vitamins. Moringa also has other essential nutrients and amino acids that can help to naturally increase energy level, which helps counteract the fatigue anemia causes.
Sickle Cell and Bone Marrow Dysfunction Anemia
Other types of anemia are not as easily treated with nutrition, but nutrition can help alleviate the symptoms. Sickle Cell Anemia is a genetically inherited type that is caused by red blood cells being an abnormal shape. The abnormal shape of these red blood cells causes them to travel throughout the body less efficiently, and it can also cause them to get trapped in or injure the blood vessels. This can cause pain and blood clots. If severe, Sickle Cell Anemia may need to be treated with blood transfusions.
Moringa Oleifera can help to alleviate Sickle Cell Anemia because it has many anti-inflammatory properties. This can help reduce inflammation caused by injury in the blood vessels from the abnormally shaped red blood cells. Since Moringa also helps to boost energy, it can also help people with Sickle Cell Anemia lessen their chronic fatigue.
Bone marrow disorders cause anemia that’s similar to Sickle Cell Anemia. One disorder that can cause bone marrow problems and unhealthy red blood cell production is Thalassemia. Unlike Sickle Cell Anemia, the red blood cells in people with Thalassemia are normally shaped. However, the disorder is also genetic, and it results in red blood cells not carrying enough oxygen. While healthy red blood cells are a deep red color, the red blood cells of people who have Thalassemia anemia are more of a pinkish color due to lack of hemoglobin.
Thankfully, mild forms of Thalassemia don’t usually need any serious treatment. Like other types of anemia, the main symptom is fatigue or dizziness.
By supplementing the body with nutrients and amino acids that treat fatigue, Moringa can help to lessen the symptoms of Thalassemia too. Not to mention, since Moringa increases levels of hemoglobin, it can possibly help the red blood cells of people with Thalassemia to be more oxygen-rich.
Scientific Studies on Moringa Oleifera and Anemia
Due to Moringa’s nutrient-dense properties, and its use to treat anemia around the world, scientists have set out to prove if it’s actually true that Moringa can treat anemia.
In 2016, a study conducted in Indonesia observed the effects of Moringa on anemia by giving a group of lab rats different doses of Moringa extract. One group of rats was given nothing, while the other was given Moringa. The study found that as the dosage of Moringa increased, so did the levels of hemoglobin. This means that the red blood cells were more efficient in carrying oxygen. The red blood cell count also significantly increased. This means Moringa was shown to improve not only the number of red blood cells, but also the quality.
A similar study was conducted in 2017, but the tests were done on human women. The study was randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled, leaving no room for bias. Women aged 16-49 took 1400 mg capsules of Moringa every day for 3 weeks. After the 3 weeks passed, the results found a significant increase in hemoglobin, iron, and other measures that contribute to red blood cell health. This study was an important leap for Moringa, because it proved that the benefits of Moringa were just as applicable to humans. It also confirmed what has long been known by Moringa users who suffer from anemia.
Moringa comes in many forms. Where do I even start?
Ultimately, what type you choose is up to your individual preference. Personally, I like to use Moringa powder to make tea or smoothies. However, some people prefer the convenience of simply taking one or two capsules a day.
