Whole Body Benefits of Oil Pulling and How-To Guide

Want pearly white teeth without using harsh chemicals or breaking your bank account? Imagine if you could do this while ALSO detoxifying your body and improving your overall health. Find out how with this simple method.

Have you ever heard of oil pulling?  This ancient technique has proven to naturally whiten your teeth and kill bad breath. It is one of the best ways to remove bacteria and plaque while also strengthening teeth and gums. This is because oil pulling removes fat-soluble toxins from deep in your oral cavity while also reducing inflammation inside your mouth. Enzymes in your saliva will mix and begin to digest the oil, making it more potent the longer you "swish" and "pull". Some say this natural teeth whitener is even more effective than flossing.

Directions

Oil pulling works by placing 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (or any edible plant based oil like Moringa or sesame) in your mouth and swishing it around for 10-20 minutes.

Our mouths harvest billions of bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and toxins. If you've ever had a cough or strep throat, you've experienced what these harmful germs can cause when they decide to invade our bodies. This is why it's important to routinely cleanse our mouths of these dangerous microorganisms through practices like oil pulling! This practice extracts toxins and harmful bacteria out of your mouth and promotes a clean environment that prevents disease.

Maintaining a healthy oral hygiene will naturally result in overall health for your entire body. Oral health acts as a gateway to general health by removing toxins from deep within your body. Similar to reflexology, each part of the tongue is connected to different organs in the body (according to Ayurvedic medicine). These organs, such as the kidney's, lungs, liver, heart, small intestines, stomach and colon can be purified by gargling and swishing coconut oil (or other oil) around your tongue and mouth. The collected toxins bind to the coconut oil and are released once you rinse your mouth.

History

Toothbrushes didn't adapt to the American culture until the 1930's, yet archaeological evidence shows our ancestors having healthy intact teeth at old age.

How is this possible?

Food had a huge impact. They didn't consume processed sugars and grains that destroyed tooth enamel. Instead they used natural tools to take care of their oral hygiene such as chewing sticks.

Oil pulling has been documented for its effectiveness since early Hindu texts and scriptures. This method has been used for thousands of years and is still more effective than commercial dental products.

5 Science Based Benefits

Since these ancient times, multiple scientific studies have been conducted supporting the efficacy of oil pulling.

Oil pulling:

Reduces plaque

Oil pulling has been shown to be effective in controlling plaques levels. This study compared coconut pulling to a placebo in a blind study and the individuals who coconut pulled showed significant differences in plaque after swishing coconut oil in their mouth for 10 minutes every day after 7 days.

Assists with gingivitis

This study compared the effects of oil pulling to mouthwash using 20 adolescent boys with gingivitis. The findings found both groups to show considerable reduction in the total colony count of aerobic microorganisms after 10 days. In conclusion, oil pulling is effective in decreasing harmful bacteria and reducing plaque and plaque-induced gingivitis.

Kills bad breath

Not only does coconut oil pulling help with morning breath but it also helps with chronic bad breath that originates from the oral cavity. Based on this study from a Dental College in Chennai, oil pulling was shows to be as effective as commercial mouthwash in reducing microorganisms that cause bad breath.

Removes toxins

Oil pulling activates salivary enzymes which absorb toxins such as chemical toxins, bacterial toxins and environmental toxins from the blood. These toxins are removed from the body through the tongue. Thus oil pulling detoxifies and purifies the entire human body

Prevents tooth decay

A study in India showed oil pulling to reduce Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which is a significant contributor to tooth decay

My routine

Immediately after waking up in the morning I grab my coconut oil and peppermint or spearmint essential oil. I scoop a spoonful of coconut oil on my spoon and then add 3 drops of essential oil. I place it in my mouth and continue my morning routine. I swish it around in my mouth while I get dressed, apply my makeup, make my bed and tidy up my room.

Once 20 minutes have passed I spit the coconut oil into the trash or an empty bottle and throw it in the trash.

If I feel like I might catch a cold I then gargle and rinse with saltwater, otherwise I brush my teeth and am ready for the day!

While traveling I bring coconut puller packets with me so I can detox at work, on the plane or while out of town.

Pro tip

Use fractionated coconut oil if you are particular about textures. If you are scooping out a tbsp of virgin coconut oil from a jar then it is likely solidified. It may feel strange placing a spoonful in your mouth and feeling it melt. Alternatively you can purchase ready to use products that make it simple and hassle free.

Personal note

It's important to take notice of your oral health because it can be directly linked to a number of diseases. For example, when I first expressed symptoms of  Chrohn's disease it wasn't JUST my intestines that were suffering. While that was at the heart of my discomfort and pain, I also showed symptoms around my mouth. My lips and surrounding area were constantly chapped. This wasn't your normal chapped lip though, it extended to about 1/2 an inch around my mouth. My skin was raw, red, flaky, and would constantly peel. My father who is an orthopedic surgeon gave me a very intensive medical lip cream that temporarily helped and alleviated the pain of my chapped lips but it wasn't until I changed my lifestyle to naturally bring down my inflammation that I saw results.

I believe it's so important to take care of your inner health and these scientific findings further reinforce how oil pulling can detoxify impurities from not only your mouth but also deep within your body. Coconut oil pulling will help prevent issues down the road and keep you feeling and looking your best.

In addition to incorporating Moringa into my diet and cutting out processed foods I also use coconut pulling and other holistic remedies to maintain my health. I hope this helps you and soon becomes part of your routine as well!
